Our first stop today was only a few kilometres (or miles) from our comfy B&B, travelling down a narrow road, and then an even narrower laneway to some old stone houses and a burial ground, full of identical gravestones lined up in neat rows.
It is the site of the first Quakers Meeting House in North England built in the 1675. It was a time of dissent amongst the ordinary people, with the established church and with those in government, the kings. George Fox arrived near the town of Sedburgh discovering a group of people breaking away from the Church of England, and with his leadership they became the Society of Friends, eventually known as the Quakers.
Brigflatts Meeting House was a special place, a place for reflection and meditation, a place for silence and peace. It was fascinating & enlightening to learn about the Quakers, from our guide, the local Warden of Brigflatts.
The Quakers respect the creative power of God in every human being and in the world around us. Quakers work through quiet processes for a world where peaceful means bring about just settlements. There is less formality, nor ministers, … every one contributes to worship as they feel led, and there is a strong focus on community… hence the name of “society of friends”. The Quaker testimonies to peace, equality, simplicity and truth are a challenge to alleviate suffering and seek positive social change. ….. ie: faith in action.
We continued travelling south and eventually into Wales and our destination of Llangollen.
As the Andersons will tell you there is this amazing aqueduct at Llangollen which carries narrow house boats across a bridge of water across a gorge, quite amazing feat of engineering.
We spent the afternoon wandering around the town centre of Llangollen soaking up the welsh culture attempting to pronounce the welsh words!!
For lunch we tried a café that advertised fresh made to order sandwiches, so after so much of a pre-packaged sandwiches, we gave it a go, … from the picture, simple made to order sandwiches seem not the norm in UK.
Tea was a picnic of strawberries and ice cream in our room at the B&B.
PS: A local trusted advisor just rang to comment on the times of these posts, as the timestamp is in Australian time, and not UK time… they were concerned that we may have had our dates wrong, and would miss our plane to Greece on Sunday !!! … only 4 days to go in UK
