Friday saw us drive north into Scotland, a lovely sunny day… and three castles on the way…
1) Bothwell Castle, a small medieval castle, a shell being restored.
2)
Stirling Castle, the home of the many Scottish Kings, till the King James of Scotland became King of England, and the monarchies merged. A statue of ‘Robert the Bruce’ stands tall at the castle entrance, considered a hero despite murdering his wife & child. An impressive castle with banqueting hall, palace & chapel.
3)Scone Palace, an impressive 13th century home of the Earl of Mansfield, and the place where Scottish Kings were crowned. Pity so many occupiers have renovated and changed the Palace so many times over the years, as most architecture is now 18th Century We continued our drive to Pitlochry for an overnight stop in a picturesque village in mid Scotland.
Our B&B was awesome, an old wonderfully restored old house with a four poster bed, with views over the town…. We dined in a riverside restaurant, and even toasted Dad (Colin) with dessert of Apple & Rhubarb and custard. Tomorrow we will be at Ullapool in northern Scotland, a town famously spoken about by Dorothy & Colin.
