The Lake District – 14th Sept

We woke up to the sound of rain – yes it is finally raining, and yes on our rest day in the Lakes District.

img_6122a.JPGWe were hoping to do some walking amongst the picturesque hills but it was too wet, so we drove around, first stop Dove Cottage – the home of the English poet William Wordsworth – very interesting plus got to read some of his beautiful poetry. Wordsworth was a mate of Coleridge – you know the poem about the Ancient Mariner (William McInnes, as Max, recites it in an episode of the TV show Seachange!!) It is incredible to be standing in a house where they lived and wrote their poetry.

The SatNav took us down some tiny roads following the lakes, taking us all the way to Sands-on-the-Grange where we visited “Holker Hall” – stunning large mansion and attractive gardens and still normal home of Lord & Lady Cavendish  …..  Unfortunately it was too wet to explore them.

We also did some shopping – bought two rain jackets – yes, we had come to UK and did not have any wet weather gear!!

We finally returned to our comfy pub (for coffee and Wireless Hotshot access)  to get out of the rain and then to an Indian restaurant in the larger lakeside town of Ambleside. Despite the rain another enjoyable day.
